Artillery is a team. It’s a creative brain trust of the most dedicated art students on this campus. The goal of Artillery is to create a group of highly dedicated student artists who endeavor to cross the boundaries of what it is meant to be a professional. Each of these students have a working portfolio that demonstrates their proficiency, continued learning, thought processes, and developing professional work. Nearly all of our Artillery students will be published before they graduate from Braden River.

A study of 10 Faces with multiple facial expressions. No face may be the same.
A compositional study of 5 to 10 images that you recreate famous movie or tv scenes in your sketchbook. Freeze frame your favorite moment in the scenes and recreate them in your sketchbook the best you can. This can be extremely helpful for understanding composition, framing, and hierarchies. Many industry professionals practice this.
Song self-portrait (Utilize music that you relate to create an amazing self-portrait)
Clothing/fashion design follow the examples on our concept art page for concept art when designing fashion. In addition, find fashion designers that appeal to you and see how they concept their work. There should be examples on Pintrest and other sites that give great examples of fashion illustration concept samples. Please watch the clothing drawing videos below.
Advertising your own cleaning product (Hero/villain, based off superheros or make up own) Must be in value and color.
Character design/sheets (3 minimum, take already well-known characters and redraw them) * Check out our own concept art page to see how to set up your sheets.
An animal in an odd environment (ex. pig in white house.) Must be in full color and value.
Create own logo of a sports team (Imaginary or real)
Still life Story... Create a story using objects using value, hierarchy, perspective, and lighting based on drawing your greatest personal triumph, tragedy, and description of you.
Perspective drawing of architecture in Sarasota, Bradenton (Or place you travel to.) The goal is to make what you draw interesting. Perspective is fundamental so 1 point, 2 point, or 3 point perspectives are very important to your approach. Don't forget value!
Caricature of someone famous. Use artist such as Thomas Fluharty, CF Payne, Court Jones, or Sebastian Kruger as quality control and reference for approach. The key to caricature is not distortion! IT IS EXAGGERATION! Think like it's raining buckets or cats and dogs. His nose is so big a parrot could perch on it; or her teeth look like horse dentures. However, remember each exaggeration tells a story. So you want to emphasize the facial features that are significant for that person in a way that messages what you want to say. Again, use the artists I mentioned as reference.
Design a fantastic circus poster. Must use typography and research the design language or traditional circus posters.
Tattoo design... research new school, american traditional, Japanese traditional, Maori, and more and be prepared to discuss the history of what you did and defend why.
Draw some environment multiple times a day with special attention to lighting.
3 café drawings... these are observational drawings like at a coffee shop or restaurant.
Pick a culture outside of U.S. and design a scene where a gift would be exchanged representing that culture. (Do your research! We must be respectful!)
Found object project where you take an ordinary object and make it into something extraordinary...ex. transform a stapler into a submarine @spacegooose on instagram.) <----Click on the link. Make sure you have full value and color.
Develop fantasy creature (With 3 seperate images: 1st skeleton structure... reference it on animal bone structures that already exist, 2nd muscle structure... use real animal muscle reference to make it believable , and full creature drawing that shows the full creature with all its colors and pattern on its skin and scale.)
Create a travel poster for fantasy place that exists in a book, movie, or video game.. Reference traditional travel posters.
Pick a well known movie or novel and change the genre of the character design through costume design (for example: Wizard of Oz into wild west characters or Alice in Wonderland characters into Samurai from the Edo period)
Draw a composed still life with everyday objects and then in a seperate picture transform it into a fictional place such as a castle, a futuristic city, and so much more! Don't limit your imagination. The fun of this project is having your audience compare the before and after.
Draw a portrait of a friend, family, or pet full value... color optional based upon the medium.
